Torus developer is implementing across their buildings a solution that is unique in the country. After months’ worth of effort, the Torus in-house research and development team, alongside external experts from Gdynia-based VBW Engineering, among others, thoroughly redesigned the air handling units (AHU), which constitute a critical element of office buildings. The introduced modification increases the air quality on leased areas, limiting the spread of various kinds of pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses.
The crises always present challenges, and in the case of the pandemic, they are also socially hurtful. Though, they can also trigger progress in many sectors of the economy, which, as a matter of the fact, we can observe now. Over the last year we have concentrated on searching for such solutions, which will meet the needs of today. Obviously, it has become a matter of key importance to provide health and safety to the people working in the office areas that we design. We have accomplished this goal within HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) systems. The comfort and safety of the office users, which we always found particularly important, have been elevated onto an even higher level. The concurrently applied solutions have not affected the costs incurred by the tenant.

Necessity the mother of invention

We were carrying out research on modification of ventilation systems for a long time. We were on the lookout for the solutions which could increase the efficiency of air handling units, and also enhance work safety. The most efficient solution is the rotary heat recovery, however, in the classic form it is characterised by a certain air leakage, which in the face of the present-day threats means that the returning air might contain some pathogens. Our modification centres on the atypical way in which we have mounted a ventilator in the exhaust part of the unit, leading to a difference in pressure that prevents the air leaking from return into supply. Furthermore, we have also mounted UV-C lamps in the exhaust part, as an additional security feature which eliminates viruses and bacteria from the ventilated air circulation.

The particular elements, components, and technologies, which we used in our solution are well-known both in Poland and abroad, though, their respective application in the given form and configuration, in the face of the current health-related threats, is by far an innovation on the office market. The pandemic presents a massive challenge also to the sanitary industry. In fact, nobody has yet thought up 100% safe technical solutions that ensure the fully effective protection against the SARS-COV-2 virus. Thanks to the common effort of multiple entities and people, we have devised a solution which significantly increased the level of protection against the transmission of pathogens across office spaces. The completed solution is awarded with respective TÜV Rheinland certificates for air handling units.
